Kegel / Tenpin

What is the difference between
Kegel and Tenpin ?

Kegel has been around for over 1,000 years and is still very popular in Europe.  It has been a bit of a sleeping giant lately and the American version of the game, Tenpin, enjoyed a huge success in the Sixties.  Tenpin is known all around the world, while Kegel is played mainly in Europe.  The two disciplines differ in a few areas:

  • The balls in Kegel are smaller and lighter then Tenpin.
  • The 9 pins in Kegel are set in a diamond pattern, while Tenpin is set in a triangle.
  • The lanes of both disciplines are about of the same length, but Kegel lanes are wider.
  • There is no oiling of the Kegel lanes as in Tenpin.
  • Any kind of shoes are allowed in Kegel as there is no sliding.
  • Kegel offers a wide variety of games, while Tenpin in general has only one game.
